The increase in extreme wildfires poses a growing security-related challenge for Europe. In order to effectively respond to these developments, several EU research projects have jointly developed an integrated strategy for wildfire risk management (IWRM). Among those involved is the Firelogue project, coordinated by the Fraunhofer Institute for Technological Trend Analysis (INT). The goal is to pool scientific insights, technological innovations, and political measures across Europe and align them strategically. The proposed IWRM strategy provides a concrete and practice-oriented roadmap for this purpose.

The Fraunhofer Institutes INT and IAF and the Fraunhofer Lead Market Aerospace Economics, together with an international consortium of medium-sized space companies and start-ups, have won the 1.4 million euro tender for the preparatory study of an independent European satellite network. With this network, the European Commission (EC) plans to ensure the data and technology sovereignty of the European Union in the future. Under the project title UN:IO, the selected study envisions a new type of satellite constellation with high-performance communications technology in various orbits whose satellites return to Earth after their operating lives, thus avoiding space debris.

Project RiskPACC (Integrating Risk Perception and Action to enhance Civil Protection-Citizen interaction) will start in September 2021. This three-year-long project is funded by the European Commission, Horizon 2020 Programme focusing on Disaster-Resilient Societies. The project consortium consists of 20 organisations across 10 European countries and is coordinated by Fraunhofer INT from Germany.

The Fraunhofer Institute for Technological Trend Analysis INT and Digital Science are collaborating to enable KATI, the technology foresight tool developed and used by Fraunhofer INT, to be combined with Digital Science’s Dimensions data, to analyse more than 116 million scientific publications with over 1.3 billion citations. Fraunhofer INT and Digital Science have also agreed to make KATI accessible to clients and interested parties outside Fraunhofer. This cooperation will be presented for the first time at this year’s fully digital Hanover Messe 2021.

Euskirchen - at the Fraunhofer Institute for Technological Trend Analysis INT in Euskirchen, scientists from the Business Unit Nuclear Effects in Electronics and Optics (NEO) have launched a series of tests with a newly installed picosecond laser. The aim is to locate places on electronic devices that are susceptible to Single Event Effects (SEEs). SEEs occur when particles of cosmic, ionizing radiation such as neutrons or protons impact on electronic components. This can lead to temporary malfunctions or to permanent damage that makes an electronic device completely inoperable.

A new three-year project, funded by the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 Programme, will seek to build a system that can better respond to urgent natural and manmade crises. IN-PREP (INtegrated next generation PREParedness programme), which was launched in Athens on 27 September, will research and develop tools to respond to three urgent challenges related to transboundary crisis management: Sharing response planning across borders and agencies, improved sharing of accurate and relevant information in real time, and improved coordination of critical and scarce resources. The Fraunhofer Institute for Technological Trend Analysis INT will have the task to analyse the conditions of crises and to identify factors for an enhanced reaction.

Euskirchen (Germany) - The Fraunhofer Project KATI receives a grant in the amount of EUR 1.2 M from the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) for a project term of three years. KATI is conducted at the Fraunhofer Institute for Technological Trend Analysis in Euskirchen (Germany). The objective of the research project is the development of an IT and data-based system to assist researchers in compiling their technology analysis.

Euskirchen (Germany) – The Nuclear and Electromagnetic Effects (NE) department of the Fraunhofer Institute for Technological Trend Analysis INT in Euskirchen has been awarded the certificate of compliance under the ISO 9001:2008 quality management standard. This certification applies to “scientific work on the effects of nuclear and electromagnetic radiation as well as conducting and developing procedures for their characterization”. Thus, the quality management system of the Nuclear Effects in Electronics and Optics (NEO) business unit previously certified in 2013 was expanded to the entire department in order to offer even greater transparency and better quality for the department’s customers.

Bremen, September 2016: The RADECS 2016 Conference will be held from September 19 to 23 in Bremen. Together with the NSREC in the US, the RADECS (RADiation Effects in Components and Systems) is the most important meeting of the worldwide radiation effects community. 400 experts from all over the world will present and discuss more than 150 scientific papers accepted for the conference.

On the Northrhine-Westfalia booth in Hall 8a, the Fraunhofer-Institute for Technological Trend Analysis INT is presenting solutions for the aerospace industry. The focus is on the threat that space weather poses to satellites and high-flying aircraft, and the detection of nuclear material at airports and borders.
